WONGIE POP SONG OF THE WEEK: rita ora - your song

rita ora - your song
ah! ed sheeran is really having a moment as a strong pop songwriter as he offers his magical touch by co-penning rita ora's latest track. after a very public spat with calvin harris who banned the use of all songs written for her last (unreleased) album, the singer took some time off music to develop her brand by hosting tv shows and start from scratch musically. this official 1st single is kind of wonderful in it's simplicity but grows on you after a few listens. welcome back!

WONGIE VIDEO OF THE WEEK: haim - want you back

haim - want you back
when you're haim why not make an LA street your personal catwalk? what i love about this video is that director jake schreier not only gives each sister a moment to walk on their own, but the simplicity of their 'choreography' is enough to showcase the intricacies of the song's arrangement. oh and it's a great pop song for the summer! happy friday people!

ONE TO WATCH: tom walker - blessings / just you and i

tom walker - blessings

tom walker - just you and i (mahogany session)
with just the EP 'blessings' under his belt, this manchester singer/songwriter has slowly turned into one of my fave debut acts of the year. with his manly growl plus sensitive lyrics overflowing with youthful phrasing, tom is primed for big things in the coming year. check out the double bill of the EP title track (and best video to showcase a successful threesome poly relationship!) followed by one of my fave songs of the year 'just you and i'. sigh...

WE HEART ISAAC GRACIE: isaac gracie - all in my mind / reverie / last words

isaac gracie - all in my mind

isaac gracie - reverie

isaac gracie - last words
yeah... can you tell i'm a fan? around the beginning of 2016 i heard a diy track by an unsigned singer/songwriter named isaac gracie that easily made my year end list. simple yet vulnerable, turns out i wasn't the only one that was floored by the debut, isaac quickly got signed to a major and has since put out two glorious EPs capturing his wonderful vocals while adding some proper orchestration to back this young talent (he's only 21 people!). collected here kicks off his latest single 'all in my mind', then moves into one of my fave songs of the year 'reverie' and then the track that started it all 'last words'. so yeah... we heart isaac gracie SO MUCH!!!

WONGIE POP SONG OF THE MONTH: shawn mendes - there's nothing holdin' me back

shawn mendes - there's nothing holdin' me back
took them long enough to make an official video for shawn mendes pop smash. part of the deluxe edition of his album 'illuminate', this song just stands the test of time as it still brings a wonderful amount of joy after two months of release. one of my contenders of the song of summer 2017 if you ask me!

WONGIE DANCE POP SONG OF THE WEEK: jax jones feat demi lovato & stefflon don - instruction

jax jones feat demi lovato & stefflon don - instruction
working with the prolific mnek this is one of those sassy summer jams that you will have no problem bopping your head to in the coming days. interesting to see demi lovato really embracing the dance community with her collabs these days (perhaps a peek into a new album?). it's silly, it's fun, we kind of love it!

NEW LITTLE MIX!: little mix feat stormzy - power

little mix feat stormzy - power
how did i miss the release of this video two weeks back? my fave girl group offer up a track that comes across as a hot mess, but weirdly in the hands of little mix, is kind of fun. throw in the most colorful unicorn explosion of a video (drag queens, biker chicks, moms!) and you've got one of the guilty pleasures around.

VIDEO PREMIERE: sia - free me

sia - free me
premiering her new song as a charity single for the #endhiv organization, sia gets zoe saldana to showcase her dance background with narration by julianne moore. worth a watch and listen, then donate to the cause to find a safe federally approved vaccine to end hiv once and for all.

VIDEO PREMIERE: fifth harmony feat gucci mane - down

fifth harmony feat gucci mane - down
i gotta say that the big brand new reboot of fifth harmony as a quintet is kind of underwhelming. releasing a 'work from home' lite when they should be coming out guns blazing in an en vogue 'free your mind' kind of anthem. hopefully the new material will be better than this perfectly find easily forgettable jam.

WONGIE VIDEO OF THE WEEK: bastille - glory

bastille - glory
honestly just play this brilliant road trip video between bastille lead singer dan smith and model may daniels. it's the ultimate cute experience to the point where you kind of want to see this couple in a movie based on this road trip! directed by daniel brereton it is easily our video of the week!

WONGIE INDIE SONG OF THE WEEK: arcade fire - everything now

arcade fire - everything now
what is happening? with it's dancing queen grooves and a frigging pan flute hook, arcade fire have unleashed one of the poppiest songs of their career! but strip away the glean of the track and you have one of the more biting commentaries of society excess around. and you can still dad dance to the track! kind of genius!

WONGIE COUNTRY SONG OF THE WEEK: little big town - happy people

little big town - happy people
there's something to be said about watching people smile back at you for 3 mins ;) one of my fave songs off of little big town's 'the breaker' album is also one of my fave songs of the year. it's simple it's sweet and it just brings a joy to me whenever i hear it. have a happy people weekend!!

WONGIE SONG OF THE WEEK: beth ditto - we could run

beth ditto - we could run
this is what happens when beth ditto gets inspired by a bit of the boss and a bit of u2 filtered through some stevie nicks, a pop rock anthem that just needs to be blasted all weekend long! gosh i love this! happy weekend y'all!

WONGIE SONG OF THE WEEK: james vincent mcmorrow - true care

james vincent mcmorrow - true care
calling it some of the best music he's ever made in his career, james vincent mcmorrow gave us a first listen of the title track of his new album that he's releasing on friday. allegedly recorded in a freer atmosphere, james himself says that you'll hear alot of 'mistakes' on the album, but yet he's in love with the imperfections. i'm definitely in love with the first listen! this is just gorgeous!

Saturday, May 20, 2017

raye - the line
south london singer/songwriter raye comes back into our radar after her super successful run collaborating with jax jones earlier this year. this time she brings a party anthem (reminding me of her buddy charli xcx) that has one of my fave bridges i've heard in awhile. turn it up cause you'll be singing along to this jam in no time!

Friday, May 12, 2017

VIDEO PREMIERE: katy perry - bon appetit

katy perry - bon appetit
i swear, i veer from borderline liking this track to being totally ambivalent with it. you got to give props to katy, cause she is trying something new, but.... not good. it's repetitive and it's neither here nor there with little moments of pop miracle. who knows if this will be the crossover hit she wants, but for now this is the proposed song of the summer!

WONGIE POP SONG OF THE WEEK: zara larsson - don't let me be yours

zara larsson - don't let me be yours
zara larsson has had access to some of the best songwriters out there for her intl release 'so good' and the results have been some of the more interesting pop songs out at the moment. i gotta say that her latest release might be my favorite of the lot. co-written by ed sheeran, the song structure builds up to a hook that is wonderfully restrained and immediately goes back to a stripped down mode. it's kind of brilliant really!

VIDEO PREMIERE: miley cyrus - malibu

miley cyrus - malibu
the return of miley marks a more earthy musical direction kicking off with this raw sounding pop rock number which is actually quite good. allegedly about her relationship about her fiance liam, this is a nice kick off to her upcoming new album in july. i like!

Monday, May 08, 2017

VIDEO PREMIERE: harry styles - sign of the times

harry styles - sign of the times
no matter how beautiful the scottish backdrop of the video or the epic orchestrations of the song itself, i'm still not sold on a song that repeats it's verse / chorus over and over again and has an air of self importance when there's really nothing there but money pumped into a whole lotta 'meh'. thank goodness harry's follow up track sweet creature is SO much better (listen below)

harry styles - sweet creature

NEW ED SHEERAN: ed sheeran - galway girl

ed sheeran - galway girl
giving the irish town a great name by showcasing a fun evening of darts, dancing, tats and best of all saoirse ronan! the song is just a tad bit obvious for my tastes, but it's ed so i'm totally willing to move on from this already bit hit. guess we will all be doing some irish jig this summer!

WONGIE INDIE POP SONG OF THE WEEK: paramore - told you so

paramore - told you so
jeez...the speed of new material from big releases this year is crazy! just two weeks after launching the return of paramore with their wonderful 'hard times' track, the trio return with an afro-tropicana jam that's equally catchy and joyous! who knew that i've become a paramore fan?

WONGIE SONG OF THE WEEK: haim - want you back

haim - want you back
though we got a live performance video from the haim sisters last week, turns out the official 1st single off their new album 'something to tell you' is this insta catchy breezy pre-summer jam that perfectly captures the spirit of the haim sound that we fell in love back in the day. world premiering on bbc radio 1 earlier today, the haim album is slowly turning into a must hear for the season!

Thursday, April 27, 2017

WONGIE SONG OF THE WEEK: haim - right now

haim - right now
capturing the haim sisters performing their new song live, paul thomas anderson has single handedly brought back a new enthusiasm for the trio that may have waned since their too close social association with a certain ms. swift. the excitement of watching the song unfold in real time should be the basis of all releases from now on. that's how you 'f**king' do it indeed!

WONGIE VIDEO OF THE WEEK: hurts - beautiful ones

hurts - beautiful ones
just watch this brutal then beautiful video about an anti-lgbtq act of violence, yet full of pride, told in reverse. what's also interesting is that this video represents the return of hurts after a 2 year break and perhaps a peek into the kind of personal / political direction for their upcoming new album. oh and lead singer theo hutchcraft makes for a damn pretty woman!

WONGIE POP SONG OF THE WEEK: tinashe - flame

tinashe - flame
this has been on high repeat over on the wongie carmix mainly because of it's pop perfection from beginning to end. it's actually tinashe's most radio friendly song and will hopefully bring this talented singer/dancer a whole much deserved audience. love this song and so should you!

WONGIE SONG OF THE WEEK: zayn feat partynextdoor - still got time / (team salut x ray blk remix)

zayn feat partynextdoor - still got time
gosh darnit! a perfectly wonderful song gets a skanky accompanying video with blunt clouds and booty tatty gals. ugh! ignore the video enjoy the caribbean infused jam.

zayn feat partynextdoor - still got time (team salut x ray blk remix)
enhancing the caribbean vibe even more, this remix is AWESOME!!

WONGIE POP SONG OF THE WEEK: paramore - hard times

paramore - hard times
marking 4 years since paramore released new material, hayley williams and co (founding member zac farro is back) put out this 80's afro new wave jam as their official return single and it's kind of awesome! throw in a colorful video and it's no surprise they garnered 2.4 million views in less than 12 hours of it's release! they're back people and it's a pretty good thing!

WONGIE SONG OF THE WEEK: lana del rey feat weeknd - lust for life

lana del rey feat the weeknd - lust for life
offering the title song of her upcoming album as her new single, lana del rey continues her journey into dreamy david lynch/bat for lashes/shangri-las territory, this time bringing the weeknd along with her. it's beautiful and of a bygone era that is strictly in a lana world. gosh this is good!

WONGIE RAP SONG OF THE WEEK: kendrick lamar - dna.

kendrick lamar - dna.
i think the first thing you gotta do (after watching don cheadle channel kendrick in the 1st half of this video) is put on that cc: button and read exactly what kendrick is saying in this song...CAUSE it is dense! torn between his fame, his expectations, what it means to be a black man in this america, his history, his connection to telling his truths, ALL OF THAT is rolled up in this hard hitting number (does the man even breathe in the 2nd part of this song?) with kendrick doing some of his best raps that defy form. it's kind of awe inspiring really...

AUDIO PREMIERE: lady gaga - the cure

lady gaga - the cure
over the weekend lady gaga offered her fans a surprising new single in the form of the uber poppy 'the cure'. to be honest, the track sounds like a soundtrack demo that never got picked up, but hey, it's still catchy as heck and a lovely surprise! don't expect this to be part of a pop makeover for gaga, this feels like a one off.

want more? check out gaga world premiering this track at coachella over the weekend:

WONGIE SONG OF THE WEEK: steps - scared of the dark

steps - scared of the dark
when it comes to steps, there is nothing but pure unadulterated love that i have for these five wonderfully cheesy performers! the song (written by carl ryden & fiona bevan) deserves an award in it's perfect crafting of an ABBA-esque modern pop sound (there's even a key change!!). then the dancing! oh the dance number than even your grandma can do! i love how the boys still have no reason to be there but be backup dancers and well... it's the perfect experience that only steps can do! 20 years in the making and it's just awesome!

WONGIE INDIE SONG OF THE WEEK: beth ditto - fire

beth ditto - fire
calling this her country sound (damn if this is country music then it sure is a rollicking great time!), beth ditto sets us all up for her upcoming new album 'fake sugar' with this gem of a jam! turn this the heck up cause it sure is fun!

WONGIE HIP HOP SONG OF THE WEEK: kyle feat lil yachty - iSpy

kyle feat lil yachty - iSpy
i mean the song is just waaaay too catchy to ignore! cali-rapper kyle is prepping for the release of his new album and this insta jam will definitely bring a whole slew of fans old and new to the fore. this will definitely keep on playing through the summer, you have been warned!

Friday, March 31, 2017

VIDEO OF THE WEEK: kendrick lamar - humble

kendrick lamar - humble
the buzz around a brand new kendrick lamar album has been kind of crazy since he offered up the anti trump track 'the heart part 4' last week, kicking off speculation that there's going be ALOT of new material coming out. well... kendrick did one better and premiered his 1st single 'humble.' which not only gives us an insight of the possible themes of the new album (fame, religion, power) but also the accompanying visuals thanks to his creative side project 'the little homies' and video maestro dave meyers. i won't say more except press play and be entertained! welcome back kendrick!

Wednesday, March 29, 2017

VIDEO PREMIERE: little mix feat machine gun kelly - no more sad songs

little mix feat machine gun kelly - no more sad songs
the world domination of little mix continues with their super catchy 3rd single off of 'glory days'. though i'm not sold on the fact that they needed machine gun kelly for popular impact (the song is good enough on it's own), i'm sure the powers that be are leaving no stone unturned to make sure this will be a massive hit! make it happen people!

Tuesday, March 21, 2017

james blake - my willing heart
shot just days before she gave birth to her newborn daughter, natalie portman looks amazing as she celebrates the beauty of pregnancy in the anna rose holmer (the fits) directed video for james blake. it's just hypnotic really.

WONGIE DUET OF THE WEEK: cold war kids feat bishop briggs - so tied up (los feliz blvd)

cold war kids feat bishop briggs - so tied up (los feliz blvd)
re-recording their current single in a more stripped down version, there's something magical watching the amazing bishop briggs work so confidently with nathan willett. the end result is an ACTUAL duet that didn't really exist in the original. love this!

VIDEO PREMIERE: clean bandit feat zara larsson - symphony

clean bandit feat zara larsson - symphony
directed by band members grace chatto and jack patterson, the brand new single by clean bandit is an emotional one fronted by the ever lovely zara larsson on vocals. to give anything away from what you'll feel by pressing play will not be fair to the experience, so press play already!

Tuesday, March 07, 2017

alt-j - 3WW
oh my gosh, this song is SO good! as if wandering the hallways, veering into different songs, one minute there's hints of west african tones, then it's a beautiful duet (featuring ellie roswell from wolf alice) next to a fuzzy trippy number, which surprisingly all makes total sense. it's kind of genius and kicks off anticipation of their new album 'relaxer'. chill never sounded so exciting!!

AUDIO PREMIERE: fleet foxes - third of may / Ōdaigahara

fleet foxes - third of may / Ōdaigahara
clocking in at almost 9 minutes, the return of fleet foxes (it's been 6 years people!!!) also kicks off their upcoming album 'crack-up', which if this 1st track is any indication, will be a beautiful swirl of musicality that is just lush! welcome back boys!!

riton feat kah-lo, mr eazi & davido - money
bringing together some of the biggest acts in africa at the moment (kah-lo was just nominated for a grammy yo!) uk dj/producer riton has just put out an insta-catchy dance number with a simple bass line over the songs' infectious melody & lyrics. this is gonna be huge, so turn it up and let this be your weekend jam!!!

Thursday, March 02, 2017

VIDEO PREMIERE: lorde - green light

lorde - green light
to call this brand new material from lorde 'highly anticipated' is a bit of an understatement since it's been almost 4 years that we've gotten a taste of the new zealand indie superstar's last hit. co-written by jack antonoff of fun., this is lorde's version of a 'f.u.' song post breakup with dazzling disco grooves and indie chaos. it's apropos that the new album is called 'melodrama' don't you think? welcome back our fave indie pop kiwi, we can't wait to hear what else you have in store for us this year!

Wednesday, March 01, 2017

VIDEO PREMIERE: bruno mars - that's what i like

bruno mars - that's what i like
like all great bruno mars songs, there's an instant likeability factor that allows for obsessive multiple listens. his new single 'that's what i like' gives you that kind of feeling but delve deeper into the soul-tastic track and you'll find a surprising number that switches grooves and hooks throughout it's run. listen up cause it's kind of awesome!

Tuesday, February 21, 2017

WONGIE COUNTRY SONG OF THE WEEK: little big town - happy people

little big town - happy people
kicking off their upcoming album 'the breaker', our fave country quartet little big town bring on the songwriting talents of lori mckenna (co-writer of their award winning now classic 'girl crush') and singer/songwriter hailey whitters in this breezy upbeat number that just puts a smile on your face. it's been on repeat and you should do the same! love these guys!

WONGIE POP SONG OF THE WEEK: katy perry feat skip marley - chained to the rhythm

katy perry feat skip marley - chained to the rhythm
honestly when you have people like sia and max martin on co-writing duties on this insta-catchy track, you really can't go wrong. inspired by the series black mirror, the accompanying video gives the bubble gum sheen a twisted undertone which makes for a compelling companion piece to the already big hit. looks like 2017 is going to be yet another big year for our katy!

Monday, February 20, 2017

WONGIE SONG OF THE WEEK: lana del rey - love

lana del rey - love
it's been two years since lana del rey graced us with tales from her dreamy corner of the world, so what a complete joy when a brand new single drifted in over the weekend. you'll be singing along to this insta-anthem within seconds so just bask in it's beauty. ah love!

WONGIE CHILL REMIX OF THE WEEK: gavin james - i don't know why (danny avila remix)

gavin james - i don't know why (danny avila remix)
easily one of my fave male vocalist of the past few years, irish singer/songwriter gavin james just brings it in every time with his smooth falsetto. what's also interesting is that every remix of his guitar based tracks work to the point of enhancing from the original. this one from danny avila is no exception, just press play, sit back and kind of swoon away. happy weekend folks!
